The Teva Ember Moc in history

Teva, a Hebrew word for nature, was founded in the Grand Canyon by Mark Thatcher back in 1984. While working as a rafting guide, Thatcher noticed a lack of proper footwear for river activities. Thus, the Teva brand was born.

In the same year, sandals became a thing among the young breed of Americans. Because of this, the popularity of Teva sandals began to rise. The following year, Thatcher set up a licensing agreement with Decker Corporation allowing it to exclusively distribute and manufacture Teva footwear.

The original design of Teva sandals was changed, creating the Universal Strapping System. Their first model in the Teva Hurricane lineup also became the basis of all succeeding sandals from the brand.

As the brand’s fame slowly rose, the people behind the company started thinking of ways to expand their product line. So, they created the Teva Ember Moc—an outdoor-inspired lifestyle shoe that is easy to wear (ideal for camping and air travel).

During the design process, several closure systems were laid on the table, some of which include zippers and Velcro straps. But in the end, creating a simple slip-on construction was the best way to transition from sandals to closed shoes.
