The idea of a tennis shoe that is made up of upper leather construction came to Adidas founder Adi Dassler’s son, Horst Dassler, in 1962. It was an unprecedented concept during the 1960’s, but that didn’t stop Dassler from pushing through with his idea and continuing to make innovations for sports products.
“Adidas Robert Haillet” was what was the tennis shoe’s name in 1965 as it was named after the French tennis player. But Haillet went to retire soon, and Adidas went in search for a replacement and be the new face of the silhouette.
Stan Smith, a US tennis star player, signed a deal with Adidas and an agreement of giving royalties to him on the Stan Smith sales. The tennis shoe went through transitions from being Robert Haillet to becoming Stan Smith. At first, it retained the name Robert Haillet but featured Stan Smith’s portrait on its tongue. It was in 1978 that the tennis shoe officially became the Adidas Stan Smith with the “Robert Haillet” name being wholly taken off from the shoe.
The Stan Smith 2 was introduced by the brand in the year 2000. The new silhouette displays some distinctive features compared to the first Stan Smith. The Stan Smith 2 showcases a fatter tongue in which the portrait was also removed and replaced with the embossed words “Adidas Stan Smith.” It was the second version of the Stan Smith that offered a wide variety of colorways. It also was the version of the original model that has become one of the best-selling.
