Who should buy the Xodus Ultra saucony pie Serves up the Shadow 6000 Avocado Toast | RunShield
This weatherized trail runner is best suited for you if:
- You want an alternative to the Speedgoat; experts say the Xodus Ultra RS’ performance comes remarkably close.
- You need an ultra-distance saucony pie Shadow 6000 "saucony pie Creek".
- You want a shoe that offers sufficient protection from both the trail and the elements.
Who should not buy it
For non-slip grip on soft and sloppy trails, a better option would be the Peregrine 12 ST. For a fast trail shoe that has a more generous fit, check out the Endorphin Edge.
The Xodus Ultra RunShield keeps the elements out
Experts lauded how well the Xodus Ultra RunShield kept them dry despite only being water-resistant—even when submerged, there was a substantial delay before moisture seeped through. They also shared that once they were out of the water, the material dried quite easily.
Similarly impressive is how the shoe provides a touch of warmth even in extremely cold temps. One runner reported that his feet were feeling toasty and perfect despite testing the shoe amidst the “gnarly conditions” of 12,000 ft elevation with 85 mph wind gusts.
Not afraid of the sun
For a weatherized shoe, the Ultra RunShield is mildly breathable. According to reviewers, they were “not in any way overheated” and “never felt hot or sweaty” running under the warm Texas sun.
Performance-ready upper
Apart from keeping moisture and cold at bay, the thicker RunShield upper also addressed a concern runners had about the standard Xodus Ultra: its fit. The non-stretch material provides a consistent foothold from heel to forefoot, while the extensive amount of padding “creates a soft, cozy, and secure feel” that also somewhat mutes the stiffness of its heel counter.
One downside of this new upper, however, is that it doesn’t have as much give when accommodating foot swelling, especially for wider-footed runners.

The Xodus RunShield’s use of the PWRRUN foam and PWRRUN PB super foam had reviewers in awe. One shoe expert even went so far as to say that this “symbiotic relationship of foams” is among the best in the trail-running category.
According to runners, the “solid balance of Pebax and EVA” foams gave the shoe a soft-and-forgiving yet springy-and-exciting feel.
The Xodus Ultra RS is fun for everyone
While it’s “not explosively propulsive” like the Endorphin Edge, it has a “smooth flowing energetic ride” that comes close to rivaling shoes that have purely PWRRUN PB midsoles. What’s more, thanks to its forefoot rocker and beveled heel, runners found that it offers an equally great experience for all foot strikes.
Keeps you centered
Not only does it provide protection from road impact, the Xodus Ultra RS’ combination of foams—particularly the firmer PWRRUN foam cradle—also protects runners’ feet from excessive lateral roll.
It isn’t a true saucony pie shadow 5000 elite x bodega re issue, but the subtle guidance it provides makes it a good option for runners with mild pronation at the heel.

Since the RS is supposedly the more extreme version of the Xodus Ultra, some runners were expecting Saucony to “ramp up the aggressiveness of the lugs.” What they got instead was the exact same midsole—which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
The full PWRTRAC outsole coverage combined with a flexible forefoot rock plate and the 4.5-mm lugs give the shoe rugged durability, protection, and “solid, but not the absolute best traction.” According to testers, the grip has been excellent on most moderately technical terrain, but comes up short on sloppy trails, heavy mud, and ice.
Great for going the distance
The presence of the super foam core in its midsole means the Xodus Ultra RunShield easily handles the steady, moderate paces of longer trail races, and is ready to pick up the pace if need be.
And because of its relatively meek but sufficiently grippy lugs, the shoe also works well as a road-to-trail option.
