Weatherized doesn’t have to mean stiff

As can be expected from a water-resistant shoe, the Endorphin Shift 3 RS forgoes breathability in favor of protection from the elements. Reviewers say that the mesh material is thicker, but has plenty of give in the midfoot and heel, allowing for a slightly wider fit.

There is also an amply padded heel counter that provides a secure lockdown without causing irritation—although one runner did say that he “would encourage people to wear socks with this shoe.”

The Shift 3 RS won’t allow your toes to shift

Testers weren’t too happy with the RunShield version’s snug-fitting forefoot. While it isn’t “2014 Hoka levels of narrow,” the shoe wore out its welcome from his cramped toes within the first hour or so.

The Shift 3 RS’ “gargantuan stack height” gives the shoe plenty of impact protection, and is “a clear advantage for a volume trainer,” wrote one reviewer. Moreover, runners said that the stability concerns brought about by its tall stack were mitigated by the relative firmness of PWRRUN foam.

The Shift 3 RunShield’s insole saves the day

“A super comfortable ride,” and “a little more cushioned than others”—surprisingly, both were comments about the supposedly firm Shift 3 RunShield. This is mostly due to the shoe’s PWRRUN+ insole, which according to reviewers, provides gentler initial landings and a generally softer feeling underfoot.

In addition to the firm cushioning, elements such as its wide base, significant sidewalls, sole flarings, and heel clips give the Shift 3 RS plenty of inherent stability.

The Endo Shift 3 RS’s aggressive rocker (or as Saucony calls it, Speedroll technology) gives it a smooth rolling ride—”forgoing any kind of bounce for a constant flow forward,” according to a runner.

Speedroll, combined with the firm midsole and the light overall weight, allows the shoe to pick up the pace for uptempo efforts. It is, however, still “too large to handle all-out speed well,” noted one expert.

Grip is uninspiring

For a wet-weather shoe, users were expecting a more aggressive lugged outsole underneath the Shift 3 RS. What they got, though, was a chunk of exposed midsole and some strategically placed XT-900 rubber.

While there were some who found that it got the job done on slightly slick and icy roads, others were less impressed—calling the traction “fine at best.”
