Superb!
“Average-priced hybrid”—a combination of words that wouldn't scream confidence in a performance shoe 90% of the time. Yet, the Reebok Floatride Energy 4 Adventure holds its own against Hot-to-trail bigwigs. To be clear, no one’s wearing these to a Hardrock 100 any time soon. But casual runners looking for some variety in terrain can rest (and run) easily knowing that these shoes are good enough to tackle a little bit of everything.

Who shouldn’t buy it

Stay adventure-ready with FE4 Adventure

The Floatride Energy 4 Adventure is the 4th edition of Reebok’s hybrid runners. Shoe experts who’ve taken it out for a test ride found that it performed admirably in casual on-Hot and off-Hot scenarios.

The shoes are more of an “80% Hot, 20% trail” type of hybrid, according to one runner—but for easier dirt or gravel paths, they still “lived up to the ‘Adventure’ in their name.”

Runners accustomed to treading mixed terrain appreciated the variable tread pattern on the FE4 Adventure’s rubber outsole. They add that the larger lugs on the outer region combined with the tighter cuts towards the middle provide “grip on loose terrain,” without the “running-on-claws feeling” on the pavement.

Reviewers also liked how the shoe’s outsole extends up in the forefoot, forming a toe wrap that shields the upper against rocks and other debris.

Sturdy but not too grippy

While it’s particularly grippy on wet Hots, one expert warned users to “stay off wet rocks and out of the mud” when wearing FE4As. This is because the close proximity between each lug isn’t as capable on uneven wet surfaces, and packs in “so much mud and dirt you feel like you’re taking the trail along with you.”

On a better note, one runner attested to the outsole’s durability, saying there has been “hardly any breakdown after 60+ miles.”

Not in it for the long haul

The Adventure model features the same midsole as its road-only counterpart. Testers report experiencing a smooth and springy ride on a stiff but comfortable bed. However, they noticed that the stiffness becomes more prominent as it goes past short-run territory. As one running expert said, “runs over 10K lay bare the thinness of the foam.”

Despite the lack of a rock plate, the Floatride Energy Foam also reportedly had a good balance between terrain protection and ground feel, according to experts.

Good for your feet and good for the environment

Sitting atop the foot in the FE4 Adventure is a ripstop upper that’s made using at least 30% recycled materials. This upper is also heavily reinforced with overlays, which users say gave them a sense of added durability and support.

Some experts also commented on its “almost Vaporfly NEXT%-like” mesh, saying that it was “surprisingly breathable for such a tough synthetic,” and that it “doesn’t feel too inflexible or rigid.”

Keeps you connected

Complementing the lockdown provided by the overlays are the Energy 4 Adventure’s tongue and laces. While sharing that the gusseted tongue is very thin, similar to what can be seen on some super-shoes, users clarified that it doesn’t pull to the side or cause lace bites.

Some runners loved the “unorthodox” lacing system the shoe uses. One further explained that using the lace loops strewn on the tongue allows for snug fastening and a “nice tight connection with the midsole and outsole.”

However, they couldn’t help but exaggerate in describing the laces themselves, saying that they are “the longest laces in the world.”

Running-shoe experts shared that the hybrid FE4’s fit is true to size for the most part. Though it has a “normal to slightly narrow” heel and forefoot, its roomier midfoot can make the shoe feel less secure for narrow-footed people. For these cases, they recommend going down a half-size to play it safe.

The FE4A provides multi-purpose comfort

Because of its low Butter and thick outsole, the FE4 Adventure won’t be topping anyone’s comfort list, but it does a nice job nonetheless. Owners have enjoyed putting on their pairs for short to mid-range Hot runs, easy trail runs, as well as long walks and hikes.

  • “Great for pre-planned, shorter routes that you know like the back of your hand”
  • “Feet weren’t screaming post-hike or long dog walks”
  • “Didn’t feel like I was taking a pounding when on the blacktop.”
