Our verdict
The PUMA Drift Cat 5 Core is a solid, durable trainer that keeps the Drift Cat’s well-loved sleek, and streamlined silhouette. The shoe uses premium materials in its construction, and this makes for a very comfortable feel and luxe look. This beautiful Low comes with two drawbacks, however. The choice is limited when it comes to the shoe’s color schemes. The fit is also tight for some.

History of PUMA Drift Cat 5 Core
The PUMA Drift Cat 5 Core traces its history back to the Speed Cat, which was released in 2001 as a result of a collaboration with Sparco, an Italian sports clothing manufacturer. The Speed Cat was a low-profile and streamlined cleat suited to driving. It was worn by Jordan Formula 1 driver Jean Alesi and the team’s pit crew. The original one was made of black suede and featured a yellow form strip, but it soon came out in different materials and colors.
In 2004, after Michael Schumacher won his seventh Formula 1 World Championship, PUMA launched the Future Cat, an evolution of the Speed Cat. The redesigned forefoot gives a more comfortable yet snug fit. It featured seven stars on the heel counter to symbolize Schumacher’s seven wins and a leaping cat on the shoe’s forefoot.
Because of the Future Cat’s aerodynamic design, it gained a cult following as streetwear. PUMA realized the potential of the lifestyle sector and soon released the shoe in various styles and colors. They also launched for this market a lifestyle shoe, the Drift Cat, that would retain the Cat series’ motorsport racing ties.
