Originally released in 1989, the New Balance 1500 may not be as comfortable as most contemporary sneakers. Sneaker royalty
The New Balance 1500 originally debuted in 1989 and was designed by renowned footwear designer Steven Smith. Smith created the 1500 with the idea of designing the “Cadillac or Rolls Royce of sneakers” and opted to use materials that exude luxury. Smith’s design resume for New Balance includes the 996, the 997, and the 574.

Flimby pride
The town of Flimby, with a population of around 1,700, is home to New Balance’s UK factory. Flimby’s people have been making shoes since the 19th century, but the industry saw a sharp decline in the 70s and 80s, leaving many people out of work. In 1982, New Balance decided to establish a factory in this town with a strong tradition of world-class craftsmanship in footwear. Since then, the 300+ employees of the factory have been producing over 28,0000 pairs a week, among them the Made In UK versions of the 991 and the 574.
