 Company History

A shoe company was established in St. Louis, Missouri, and was called Bryan, Brown & Company. Named after its founders, Alvin Bryan and George Warren Brown began their shoe business in 1878. Brown and Bryan hired a few skilled cobblers from Rochester, New York that will be designated to the factory in St. Louis, and it caught on quick.

The Brown Shoe Company had about six hundred factory employees. By the early 1900s, the company was growing strong, at a rate of around $1 million a year. Unfortunately, during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the Brown Shoe Company struggled to keep costs down, which ultimately resulted in its bankruptcy in 1939.

After a couple of years, the company began its rebirth by opening a manufacturing plant in Tennessee. At this point, it was steadily moving in the direction of shoe retailing. In 2015, the Brown Shoe was renamed Caleres, and now manages various shoe brands such as Famous Footwear, Dr. Scholls, Ryka, and Naturalizer.
