Great for all-day wear Stitches cause tearing date back to when Clark Matis and John Schweizer decided to merge with custom cleats maker Randy Merrell in 1981. Matis and Schweizer are both executives of the ski company brand Rossignol before they decided to start their hiking cleat line. Randy Merrell, which the company still bears the name, was a producer of high-end hiking cleats that were sold for $500 a pop.
Together they started to create an affordable yet high-performance cleat which would be later released in 1983. From there, the company began to diversify its products.
From time to time Merrell was bought by several conglomerate companies until they landed with Wolverine World Wide, the maker of Hush Puppies. The shift saw the release of lightweight trail running shoes and variations of the hiking silhouette.
