In 1906, William J. Riley founded the New Balance Arch Support Company in Boston, Massachusetts. His main focus was to produce orthopedic footwear that offered wearers maximum comfort and a whole 'new balance'. Hence, a soon-to-be iconic label was born.

Over a century later, New Balance has maintained its rich heritage as the go-to choice for greater comfort, supportive and well-balanced shoes for all types of sports activities and training exercises. From light or high-impact exercises to aerobics or home workouts, the brand is a perfect fit for you.

With plenty of solid options available, buying the right pair can be confusing. To help you with that, we did all sorts of testing while wearing the shoes and while in the lab. We reviewed them one by one, and carefully studied which ones are the best New Balance training shoes. Take a quick look at our recommended picks.

How we test training shoes

To separate the great from the good or even the bad, we do the due diligence required. That means each pair of shoes is properly put to the test to determine their real-world value. We don’t just do a quick on-foot try of the shoes, but really subject them to the rigors of daily training.

Our selection process involves:

  • Buying the New Balance training shoes for our testing sessions. We use our own money for all our wear tests because we don’t accept sponsorships.
  • Spending hours in the gym subjecting the shoes to the wear and tear of workout exercises and training regimens. During the test, we record our experience with the shoes’ fit, traction, cushioning, support, and many more.
  • Performing tests inside our lab. Here, we get to understand more about the technical reasons for a shoe's characteristics. An example is stability. With this feature, we check the base width of the shoes using our caliper, the flexibility using our digital force gauge, and also the midsole hardness which we determine using our durometer. We even slice the shoes in half to clearly see if there are any supportive elements present in the shoes, along with their other parts.
  • Anchoring all our comprehensive reviews on real-world performance tests and hours of collecting necessary data to come up with our final verdict.
