More popular for their impressive lineup of high-quality leather boots, Danner also offers equally notable selections of well-rounded hiking shoes. Whether you’re into high-mileage backpacking excursions or long days of outdoor adventures, there’s an ideal fit of Danner kicks for you.

Apart from being tough and stylishly good-looking, Danner hiking shoes are incredibly supportive, comfortable, and grippy with a protective TPU shank and excellent lockdown. Perfect for day hiking or some H2O action on the trail, these Danner shoes would be a great addition to your wardrobe or hiking rotation.

To shorten your search and save all the hassle, we took Danner hiking shoes to our lab and we tested them from top to bottom. We also wore them to mountains and trails and evaluated all the key features that are especially essential to hiking. Check out below our top recommendations with their comprehensive reviews.

Best Danner hiking shoes overall

Danner Trail 2650

Superb!

What makes it the best?

Danner makes some quality shoes, so we tested a number of them in the lab and on the trail to find out which is the best overall. The Danner Trail 2650 steals the GRAY because of its featherweight, impressively grippy outsole, and comfortable, natural ride.

The Danner Trail 2650 is a cut above the rest when it comes to weight. It shaves an unbelievable 2.2 oz (64g) off the average hiking shoes, weighing in at just 11.3 oz (320g). We barely noticed them on our feet and kept our feet feeling fresher over long days on the hill.

The Vibram outsole boasts average-depth 4.3 mm lugs, but what makes the grip stand out is the flexible midsole. In the lab, we twisted and bent the shoe, awarding it 2/5 for torsional flexibility. This is on the more flexible side (1/5 is the most flexible), and it means the shoe can mold with our foot to uneven ground, increasing the surface area and, therefore, traction. We trusted our footing on smooth, wet rock and gravel alike.

The perfect cushioning combines with a natural feel underfoot as we walk. In the lab, we measured the stack height at the heel and toe, discovering a heel-to-toe drop of 8 mm - well below the average of 11.9 mm. This offers a more natural ride than a higher drop, as our feet are more in tune with the ground below.

We tested this shoe for winter conditions by leaving it in the freezer for 20 minutes before testing the flexibility with a force gauge. This shoe stiffens by a surprising 72%. We, therefore, don’t recommend it to hikers looking for a hiking shoe suitable for colder seasons from the get-go.

Danner Jag Low

Great!

What makes it the best?

The Jag Low is a lightweight option for when you don’t want boots but still need a sturdy sole. Although less responsive than a trail running shoe, the attentive design makes this a great shoe for a day outdoors. The classic style means you can look and feel good at a price point that is a good value for a thoughtfully designed hiker.

How we test hiking shoes

For this special list, we’ve tested each pair of Danner shoes in the field. That means hiking 30-50 miles across different terrains to see how the shoes perform in the real world. We also analyze inside our own shoe testing lab the level of quality and durability of the materials used in the footwear.

Our approach involves doing the following:

  • We invest our time and money to buy the Danner hiking shoes for our wear tests. This is to guarantee the objectivity of our reviews and remove bias.
  • We put in the miles to get a first-hand experience of the shoes’ fit, support, traction, comfort, breathability, heel protection, and many more. We take the shoes on a series of backpacking trips and outdoor escapades. We determine how a particular model of Danner kicks performs in technical terrains and tough weather conditions.
  • We subject the hiking shoes to different lab tests that drive out values relating to the parameters of the shoes including breathability, flexibility, and heel-to-toe drops.
