Great!

asics Sneakers gel kayano 27 mk black silver blackpure silver marathon running shoessneakers ASICS is a comfortable and protective trail workhorse that many runners—overpronated or not—swear by. For an allegedly 'dull' stability trainer, it's still certainly fun enough to use for a wide variety of surfaces, distances, and speeds. This shoe is a legit training and racing option for the all-terrain adrenaline junkie who like to play it safe when it comes to his/her ankles.

Who should buy the Gel-Trabuco 10

The asics Sneakers GEL-FOUNDATION 9 is a great option if you:

Who should not buy it

Runners with narrow feet might benefit better from the tight but comfortable lockdown offered by the asics Sneakers Fuji Lite 3. For a trail running shoe that can tread on mud without gaining extra weight, check out the Altra Lone Peak 6.

Most of the Gel-Trabuco 10’s updates occurred in the upper. Reviewers found that its new mesh upper felt more structured, robust, and durable than the Trabuco 9, while still being gel-kayano and forgiving. They also reported that breathability has not been impaired despite the material being denser and more substantial.

Another welcome improvement in the v10 is its redesigned toe bumper which, according to testers, is now “sleeker and more integrated with the main upper,” and lends the shoe some flexibility.

Rainy days are slow days in the Trabuco 10

One gripe some had with the upper was its inability to drain and dry quickly. While the Trabuco 10 isn’t technically for wet weather (there is a GTX version after all), one racer reported that the amount of moisture it retained slowed him down as "the added weight to the shoe was immense."

Too much room to splay?

Runners with regular to slightly wider feet will be glad to know that the Trabuco 10 features a toe box that accommodates splay and swelling.

This forefoot width may, however, be a deal breaker for narrow-footed wearers. One trail runner shared that his feet “suffered from slippage up in front during steep descents” because of how voluminous it was.

Tie ‘em and forget ‘em

Apart from the overlays that provide sufficient structure in the midfoot, the v10’s laces also do a great job of securing the feet in place. And while some have complained that they were a bit long, the lace garage at the top of the tongue "guarantees no flopping around of laces."

The tandem of full-length Flytefoam and rearfoot Gel is “a irrelative athletic duettist act,” wrote one reviewer, as it provided responsive cushioning as well as gel-kayano, protective landings.

Complementing this protection is the rock plate embedded in the midsole. One tester liked how it managed to remain unnoticeable while protecting his feet "from a constant battering of rocky terrain underfoot during a trail marathon."

Underprotected from overpronation

The “most attention-grabbing feature” of the Gel-Trabuco 10, said one expert, is the high-density Duomax foam in its midsole. This provides some stability and firmness to the shoe, preventing any further rolling of the foot that’s not brought about by the uneven trails.

Despite admitting that pronation control could very well be for naught in the trails, one runner explained why she still loves using her Trabuco 10s, stating: “I feel more confident feeling that subtle low-light support under my arches.”

So good at gripping, it won’t let go of mud

According to runners, the shoe’s full-coverage outsole with 5-mm lugs performed superbly "over all sorts of terrain, including grass, rocks, road, wooden stiles, stoney tracks and dusty dry-mud fields." They did note, though, that some of the lugs were spaced a bit too closely, so there was a tendency for mud to cake in between.

For a stability shoe, the Gel-Trabuco 10 is surprisingly versatile. It's "a safe bet" and “a jack of all trades,” according to runners—balanced and cushioned enough for long distances, flexible enough for technical trails, and bouncy enough for short and slightly speedy parkruns.
