Great!

The Wrangell GTX from Scarpa proved that it is ready for outdoor obstacles. Its quality construction provided sufficient waterproofing, warmth, ankle support, and durability. However, these prime features were not enough to camouflage its shortcomings. Overall, to fully enjoy the Scarpa Wrangell GTX, a few modifications—such as using an aftermarket insole and trying different lacing techniques—might help.

The Scarpa Wrangell GTX is a waterproof B2 mountaineering boot best suited for:

  • traditional mountaineering and extended excursions
  • tackling long days in snowy conditions

Offers smooth transition and comfort

The Scarpa Wrangell GTX was found to be a massive hit for traditional mountaineering and extended excursions. It has a full leather upper with a Gore-Tex laminate which renders protection and comfort on trails.

Underfoot, its EVA midsole and Vibram outsole form a rockered profile. This design promotes a smooth transition from heel strike to toe-off for a more comfortable stride. The Wrangell GTX is a fairly true-to-size, unisex mountaineering boot.

Scarpa non-plastic boots are based on European sizing which has smaller increments (compared to US sizing) between each size for a more precise fit. Generally, the brand designers recommend getting a half size bigger than the usual.

As for women, they have to size down to get the best fit possible. This footgear is shaped using the DL last. Its profile presents a high volume and roomy fit. Its lace-up closure allows users to customize the fit.

Track and field and long break-in period

Some outdoor lovers were a tad disappointed with its extended break-in period.

The Wrangell GTX from Scarpa had insufficient arch support, according to a few dismayed mountaineers. They mentioned that replacing the insole was necessary.

Using a crampon-ready Vibram M4 Tech outsole, the Scarpa Wrangell GTX grants stability on uneven terrain even when carrying a heavy load. It is made from Mont compound which maintains its grip even at very low temperatures.

The clover-like boots provide multidirectional traction. The ground contact on the heel and tip of the forefoot is widened, allowing for the shoe to assist well on ascents and as well as descents. Its aggressive heel brake also aids on downhill slopes.

Absorbs ground impacts

This high-cut mountaineering boot features the nylon Pro-Flex XT insole. This material is paired with an integral shank that optimizes support.

The footbed sits atop an EVA-MP midsole which renders lightweight cushioning and absorbs negative ground impacts. The boot comes with crampon connections at the heel and toe.
