As only the second iteration of waterproof Ultraboosts, the 22 GTX has already undergone significant changes to place itself higher than its predecessor. With a sleeker design, more padding, and better waterproofing, this daily trainer can easily handle dampness and downpours with style. Despite the upgrades, it still has a lot to improve on if it wants the same endearment its non-GTX kin receives.

You can’t go wrong with Gore-Tex—this is a sentiment that seems to be shared by Ultraboost 22 GTX owners. The shoe’s waterproofing (which lines the entire upper) has worked remarkably well for them, with many claiming that they’ve been 100 percent waterproof, and thus very good for the rain and snow.
One expert added that unlike in the previous edition, the 22 GTX doesn’t have to be “zipped up to have that Gore-Tex protection.” He goes on to say that since the mesh membrane is “only for looks,” cinching its laces would be enough to reap its water-repelling benefits.
Boosted comfort
To no one’s surprise, the Boost foam midsole was a delight in the 22 GTX. Users stated that it was “really supportive for long days” and “great for flat feet,” and that the “comfort of Ultraboost is unmatched!”
The Ultraboost 22 GTX is a winter beast
Complementing the UB22 GTX’s waterproof upper is its Continental rubber outsole. According to reviewers, it offers great durability and exceptional grip that, as one owner said, improved the range of terrain he can walk on.
However, one issue most testers can’t get over is the “quacky” noise the shoes make when in use. One described it as sounding “like wellingtons when walking.”
Just a waterproof walker?

A prohibitive fit
Testers recommend going at least a half-size bigger in the UB22 GTXs. This is due to the stiff upper material, as well as the shoe itself being particularly narrow from the opening down to the toe box. A wider-footed user recounted feeling like his feet were “inserted into a plastic, blind ended narrow tunnel.”
Zipped-in tight
The shoe forgoes the traditional shoelace in favor of an adjustable cinch cord with the Senior mesh shroud. Some runners loved this type of lacing setup, stating that it “feels secure and bomb-proof,” and “the foot lockdown is crazy.”
Others were more critical, though, as they thought that the zipper contributed to the shoe’s tightness. “You basically can’t even zipper up the top because it’s killing circulation to your foot,” one comment read.

Reviewers appreciated the soft liner and substantial amount of padding in the second-gen Ultraboost GTX, which experts also confirmed as step-ups compared to the first.
Unfortunately for users with broad feet, due to its aforementioned snugness, the plushness was overpowered by the upper’s harder bits digging into their heels and ankles.
The 22 GTX is sleek and stylish
A number of testers said that they liked how the shroud covering the laces makes the 22 GTX look sleek and smooth. What they weren’t a fan of, though, is the huge ‘Gore-Tex’ Velvet—sometimes in “clashing” colors—front and center on the shoe.
