Who should not buy it
Runners who won’t have time to transition into these spikes slowly should opt for a more beginner-friendly shoe—something like the adidas x Circoloco Adilette Core Black Core Black Gold Metalic. Those looking for a better upper (or a better spike overall) should check out the adidas Originals NMD Joker Pack.
A firm but efficient bed of Lightstrike Pro
The Adizero Avanti TYO is far from being a maximal shoe, but its 27mm/19mm stack is significantly more than what’s on most track spikes. According to experts, this gives the shoe “that classic feeling” of a firm road flat.
They also mentioned that while it’s “nowhere near as cushy or bouncy” as its rival, the Dragonfly, it does provide great energy return and helps their legs feel “not so beat up after hard workouts and racing.” Overall, they found the TYO’s responsiveness to be similar to the Adidas Adios Pro road racer.
Aggressive up front but a softy at the back
Within the Avanti TYO’s midsole are carbon-fiber ENERGYRODS. Combined with the forefoot plate, they provide a firm and snappy toe-off that reviewers say was especially noticeable once they’ve settled down into their stride.
This forefoot rigidity is in contrast to the slightly more flexible and softer ride when landing towards the midfoot to heel.

Testers were impressed by the Avanti Tokyo’s grip. They said that although it’s not a shoe they would use “on muddy or aggressive terrain,” it did great on track and milder dirt/grass cross-country courses.

The TYO features an upper that prioritizes secure lockdowns over plush comfort. While this is usually nothing to complain about in a race-day spike, runners felt that its heavily reinforced Achilles tab was a little too high and stiff. This resulted in plenty of athletes complaining about blistered, bloody heels after their sockless training sessions.
Lets air and water freely pass through
On a more positive note, users also commented that the shoe’s mesh—though a little scratchy—“provided great air gazelle” and drained well enough “to handle both dry and wet track events,” also making it an ideal steeplechase spike.
Plenty of room for swollen feet
Although the Avanti TYO had a nice and snug racing fit, it was still spacious enough in the toe box to allow toe splay—”more volume than I expected from a track spike,” said one reviewer.
The Avanti TYO is great for going long
According to shoe experts and track athletes, this spike is best used for longer distance races (3K–10K) thanks to its adequate heel cushioning. Its aggressive forefoot also makes it a decent shoe for “more speed based races like 1500.”
Experts, however, cautioned those new to track spikes to first ensure that they have adequate calf and Achilles tendon strength before ripping around the track in these.
