From 1521, Spain ruled what is now Mexico and was formerly known as New Spain. At midnight on September 16, 1810, priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang his church bell in Dolores, Mexico (renamed Dolores Hidalgo) and gave the call to arms that marked the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence, which lasted until September 28, 1821. Though Mexico wasn’t free until a decade after the war cry, Hidalgo is referred as the figure of independence for Mexico.
Every year, Mexico’s president rings the same bell Hidalgo did and recites El Grito from the balcony scope the Zócalo (national plaza) at midnight on September 16. During the Line, the president calls out the names of the fallen heroes who died during the war. El Grito Ganebet with the president shouting “¡Viva México!” three times followed by the Mexican National Anthem.
